New Waves score 141/4 TrendSetters score 119/8
It was a nice game on Saturday even though the player turnout was very poor. Some of the stars were missing from both sides. NewWaves won the toss and opted to bat first. With only six players to play, the strategy was simple – to stick around and bat out the entire 25 overs. Sai Petluri and Chandru opened the innings for NewWaves and Naren and Yatin on the other side. Naren, who is totally out of form these days, gave a nice start for NewWaves in the form of Wides and loose ‘HitMe’ balls. But from the other side Yatin was bowling with all his composure as usual not letting the batsman free his arms. The poor performance in the very first over by Naren saw him out of the attack giving room to KP. KP bowled a good line but didn’t do the magic for Yatin and then Yatin came back to take a wicket in the form of Chandru. Zia joined Sai on the wicket and steadied the innings with singles and boundaries here and there. Then came Rajesh Ramanujam (the only good thing happened to TrendSetters in the recent times) in to bowling attack. He was able to contend the batsman and the runs are hard to come by. Batsman at one time looked like wanted to play out his bowling and score of the other bowlers and they successfully did but in the mean forgot to take any runs. And in this process ‘Hard hitter’ Chetan replaced Sai for some quick runs but couldn’t connect any shot really well and soon got out trying to loft a straight ball from KP. Uday joined Zia and just at the time they were looking to build a partnership, Yatin bowled this excellent delivery and broke the Zia’s stance as well as stumps. Then Madhu joined Uday. This right hand - left hand combination confused the bowlers and TrendSetters started doing at what they are very good at – bowling wides. Even Yatin and Rajesh gave away a lot runs in the form of wides and this brought the batsman’s confidence against Rajesh. Uday played a scintillating loft over covers in the bowling Rajesh, which is by far the most confident shot, played by any batsman against him so far. Running out of options, Yatin has to bring his ‘part time’ bowler Kuljit, who is contending for his bowling spot from long time, and he took the wicket of Uday who was looking very dangerous by this time. Uday’s fall of wicket brought Sai back to the field. Madhu and Sai never looked back from that point. Keeping in mind that there are enough overs and last two batsmen, they played sensible cricket picking singles and doubles and occasional boundaries. They scored all over the ground and ended the innings at 141-4. Once again TrendSetters scored the second highest score for NewWaves in the form of extras. NewWaves did a good job in scoring 141 with only 6 players on their side.
With 142 to score in 25 overs Sumeet and axed captain Kuljit opened batting for Trendsetters. NewWaves Skipper (Uday) has a advantage of five specialist bowlers in the team and opened the bowling attack along with Chetan. Both maintained the line and length and bowled good spelled. Uday gave way to the left arm seamer Madhu. Kuljit had hard time facing Madhu and got out on a excellent delivery from him. No wait, almost forgot to talk about his straight four he hit which is not very common to Kuljit. That sure was an excellent drive on his front foot. Miracles don’t happen every ball and so he got out soon Mani came in to join Sumeet. Sumeet once again failed to live upto the expectations of the captain and other team members. Though he scored 20 runs from nice shots, he looked struggling at the wicket trying to settle for big score. From an excellent ball after a lot of wides and juicy balls from Zia, Sumeet failed to make a contact to the as it moved towards the keeper taking the middle stump on its way. All the NewWaves were so excited on the fall of Sumeet’s wicket as every is aware of the fact that one wicket can literally take away the match from their pockets. As NewWaves were celebrating the wicket of Sumeet another dangerous batsman Sumanth came in and started to middle the ball from he start of his innings. Sumanth and Mani started a nice partnership but soon Mani caught up in a mix up ran for a single where wasn’t one. Sai picked up the ball and handed it to Zia to close Mani innings. Yatin came on to bat even before he can open his account got out to bouncing delivery from Chetan that hit him in on his chest and then finding the wickets. Naren came on to bat wanting to score all the runs he gave away in bowling and scored six runs before Zia of a nice flighted delivery from Sai stumped him. KP, a veteran star failed once again to score big and pretty much got out to a similar delivery that Naren got out. Rajesh joined Sumanth and just at the time the latter was looking dangerous got out off Sai’s bowling trying for big shots. Rajesh with all the team hopes in his basket went on to hit every thing and in the process scored 18 runs that included a 11 runs from an over from Sai. Uday realized the danger and soon got back into attack and was fruitful in taking the wicket of Rajesh and the match. Sumanth, who took a well-judged catch, helped Uday in closing the innings. Excellent all-round performance from Sai who score 37 runs not out and 3 wickets in 5 overs earned him a well-deserved Man of the Match. Kuljit, after the match expressed him concern about his team who have been losing in the recent times and threw a challenge to the opposing skipper and said “I’ll be the captain this time and we ARE going to win the next game”.
